Professional Dispositions Statement Assessment

As an educator, it is crucial that I demonstrate professionalism by adhering to fundamental values of honesty, fairness, and respect. This involves being punctual, reliable, and always presenting myself professionally. Not only does this create a positive impression on our students and school community, but it is also my responsibility to follow the Model Code of Ethics, recognized professional standards, and the Professional Dispositions of Learners. Honesty is essential, and I must always speak truthfully and follow through on our commitments. I will demonstrate qualities of humor, empathy, and warmth. I believe that all students can learn, so involving every student in the learning process is vital. I will communicate caring and concern and become involved with others. When working with parents, it is critical to prioritize principle three: Responsibility to Students. This means treating them and their families with dignity and respect, promoting their health, safety, and well-being, and using appropriate verbal, physical, emotional, and social boundaries. We must also be mindful of students' age, gender, culture, setting, and socioeconomic context while building strong relationships with their parents through communication and involvement. I will treat students with dignity and respect at all times. Furthermore, ethical decisions must be made transparently and maintained confidentiality. I will be sensitive to student differences. Fairness involves promoting social justice and equity, building positive relationships with students and their families, and being receptive to their concerns. I believe it is my job to create a learning environment conducive to the development of students' self-confidence and competence. Finally, I will honor my commitments, treat others with respect, embrace diversity, and welcome different perspectives to contribute to our professional growth. I can foster a positive and ethical professional image by embodying these values. The self-assessment I underwent confirmed my commitment to my professional dispositions statement by aligning my strongly held beliefs with the standards set forth in the Professional Dispositions. As I progressed through my program of study, I gained a deeper appreciation for the significance of upholding professionalism through my words and actions, both in and outside of work. It became clear to me that I am a role model within the community I serve, and therefore, I must be mindful of any actions that may compromise my reputation. It is essential to recognize that administrators, parents, and students could easily form negative opinions of me based on my behavior, which could have severe consequences. To improve my conduct, I have taken steps to clean up my social media presence. I have un-tagged myself from any incriminating photos and removed any controversial posts.Professional dispositions encompass the values, attitudes, and traits that define how individuals in a profession conduct themselves. These inherent qualities and beliefs shape their approach to work and interactions with others. Meanwhile, the Model Code of Ethics is a set of principles established by a professional organization to guide ethical behavior within the profession. It serves as a framework for ethical decision-making and sets expectations for professional conduct. The relationship between professional dispositions and the Model Code of Ethics lies in the fact that professional dispositions play a significant role in determining the ethical behavior of individuals within the profession.

Personal Teaching Philosophy

I am Maria Vargas, a student teacher at Harry E. James Elementary in Hopewell, VA, working with second-grade English language learners. My passion for teaching stems from my own struggles as an ELL student. I hold an Associate of Arts in Early Childhood Education from the University of Arizona Global Campus and will obtain a Bachelor's degree in Education from Grand Canyon University in April 2024. I prioritize creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for my students and am committed to ongoing professional development. My strengths include increasing student engagement through conversation and conferencing, using countdowns and reminders to keep students on track, and utilizing KWL charts to promote inclusivity and interactivity.
